In the scene where Officer K arrives home after work, we see the aspects of lighting combined with character is used effectively. For instance, when K is walking to his apartment the lighting is low-key and dim. It’s very dull, colourless, and bare of any objects. This can be compared with the character of K as he is lonely, hated and an outcast. The director combines these aspects to show the bleak outlook of the world K lives in as he’s isolated from everyone, and how his apartment reflects himself and how he feels. These aspects used were able to help the audience get an idea of how K is portrayed through his apartment. It allows us to understand that K’s life is meaningless and lacks any personhood. The combination of both the lighting and character in the scene help show his journey in figuring out if he was the special child. As the film progresses K’s character development changes and his personhood increases.
